So, um, Glitterland is a finalist for this year’s Lambdas. Which, um, is amazing. Just amazing.
And I can’t make the ceremony because New York and, also, life.
But here’s a thing I’ve done to kind of, I don’t know, celebrate in a very small way. I should also probably apologise because, err, I don’t think voice acting is the career opportunity I missed out on.
But, um, here is me reading a bit of Glitterland. Enjoy. Maybe.
This made me HAPPY beyond words. π So glad you decided to post it! AND CONGRATS on being a FINALIST!!!! That’s SO AMAZING!!!!!!
*coughs* shy *coughs*
Also probably deeply offending Essex.
But thank you. It’s β¦ such an honour π
First of all, congratulations on the Lambda finalist placing! That is so wonderful and well deserved!
Secondly, I
Dammit, my comment was cut off! What I tried to say was that I
really enjoyed listening to the clip. You did good! *hugs*
*hugs* Thank you π I was hoping it would be β¦ entertaining.
And, yes, very shocked and thrilled about the Lambda thing. I absolutely was not expecting that. So β¦ *boggle*
Alexis, your voice is just as I imagined it would be…even with your awful attempt at a nasal Essex accent hehe. Thanks so much for making me giggle at Darian, Ash & Glitterland all over again, it remains one of my fave stories ever!! β₯β₯
Yeah, I think my Ash is probably better than my Darian – *coughs* wonder why. I was channelling a friend for my Essex – though I think I’ve probably just likely horribly insulted the guy π
Glad you enjoyed it, Essex aside, and thank you for the kind words about Glitterland. That makes me really happy π
First of all, congrats for being a Lambda finalist, well deserved I think.
Thanks for the sound bite, it revived that scene for me. Your voice a slap of British on my laptop. π
Thank you π I β¦ I am a little shocked about it π
Gosh, a slap of British? That sounds so unpleasant. Couldn’t it have been a β¦ hug of British? Or a gentle pat of British? π
Definitely a total hug of British which my ears and laptop are not used to. A totally happy slap. π
Congratulations on being Lambda Finalist! A well-deserved honor. π
And thank you for this audio clip, it’s delightful hearing the rhythm of the narrative in your voice. π
Oh thank you – I’m still slightly boggled about it. Boggled in a giddy, delighted, awkward way π
Haha, actually as I was reading I was thinking to myself “jesus, man, write shorter sentences” π But then Ash would NEVER write shorter sentences. But he’s not a very readable narrator.
Congratulations!
(If I were to say it out, I’d sound nasal too as I’m having a bad case of cold.)
Best of luck to you!
I have a cold as well – which can you probably tell from the audio. And thank you π
Actually, I meant to add: Your voice reminded me of a younger Hugh Grant, in one of his early romcom’s. And this is totally a compliment. π
Absolutely brilliant! Another reminder of why I loved this book so much. Congratulations on your nomination! Very well deserved.
Oh thank you π I’m really happy you enjoyed it, and having me blunder through it didn’t, y’know, kill the book π
Quite the opposite. I loved hearing your voice and thought you were the perfect narrator!
You’re too kind, thank you π Rather worryingly, I probably sound a little bit like Ash…
No way, you don’t sound a bit like the Queen!
*laughs* Very true!
Congratulations! It was wonderful hearing you read part of Glitterland. Makes me want to read it again. For the umpteenth time. π
Aww, thank you π I’m so glad to have entertained you with my kind of β¦ hit and run narration π
If you do not win, I’m going to have to go over there and slap a judge.
And you sound adorable! But I can tell you’re really shy about it because you’re reading so fast. To quote someone or other, most directors in the world could be replaced by a tape loop saying “slow down…. slow down….”
*laughs* I think there’s some pretty strong competition. I’m just chuffed to make it into the finals. That’s a big deal for me π
And, yes, weirdly β¦ reading your own book induces vast amounts of self-consciousness. I tend to speak quite fast and hand wavingly most of the time anywayβ¦ so at least I sound authentically like me π
Congratulations and good luck, you so deserve to win!! Thank you for this wonderful treat…music to my ears! This made my day and I’m still smiling! Now I feel like a re-read is on order, I need to spend more time with Darian and Ash!
Oh thank you π I think there’s some pretty strong competition there, so I won’t be sad if I don’t win. It’s just really nice to be nominated.
And I’m really glad you enjoyed the reading – thank you for the kind words, though I’m not sure there’s much musical about it π
Congratulations on the nomination, I squee’d for you when I saw it. π I would love to see you win.
Thank you so much for doing the reading for us, it was fantastic. There’s something about hearing an author read their words that just makes it…more. It also made me wish that the book was available in audio, so maybe that is something you can investigate at some point? I get all my favorite books in audio if they are available, another way to experience that which I love. Plus I just loved your comments, “I’m far to British to read that…” I’m unable to stop grinning at that.
Congratulations again, so happy for you!
Thank you π I’m really proud to make into the finals so, basically, it’s all good π
I’m really happy you enjoyed the reading. Now you mention it, I do also enjoy hearing authors reading their own words, it’s just weird to translate that back to myself. My audio book of Shades of Milk and Honey is read by the author, and she’s wonderful. And I’ve been enjoying Ruthie Knox’s blog posts π
I’m not sure there’s much likelihood of a Glitterland audiobook to be honest – firstly m/m books are pretty niche, and secondly the publisher has the audiorights. I did try to get them back at one point, but it wasn’t possible – but it’s not a big deal. You live and learn π
I don’t know at what point it becomes monetarily sensible to pursue audiobooks but there are a good number of them available in the m/m genre. Hopefully some day you’ll get the rights back whether you decide to pursue that avenue or not.
Again, congratulations on the nomination, it is more than well deserved!
Probably not when you’re a tiny debut author, which is perfectly reasonable. I think the rights will revert to me after a few years, so I’ll be able to look into it again then π
Do you know I have no clue what the Lambdas are? Sad. I’m googling it right away! But, congrats- any nomination/award thrown your way is well deserved.
Loved hearing your darling Brit accent, and your words-great snappy dialogue, and that beautiful prose especially towards the end…at that point I closed my eyes and let the words wash over me…..gorgeous language, Alexis π
Michele
They’re kind of a big deal in the LGBT community so β¦ it’s kind of a slight shock to be on the finalist list π And thank you π
And I’m probably getting unfair accent related points. I sound pretty banal to most British people π
Oh yeah… you remember that English guy who went to America in “Love Actually”? Would totally happen. π
*runs for plane*
Loved hearing it as it’s meant to sound π
Haha, I’m not sure it’s meant to sound like that, but I’m so happy you enjoyed it π
Squee is right! Exactly my reaction when I heard about your nomination & then again when I saw you’d made this recording for us! It was so awesomely cool to actually hear your voice π And please stop apologizing all over the place silly man π your voice was perfectly adorable & even though you didn’t sound exactly how I imagined (no one ever does) at the same time it somehow sounded just like you – which, I assure you, is a very good thing π Thank you so much for this & congratulations again on the nomination!
*joint squeeing*
Also I’m culturally mandated to apologise all the time – so sorry π
It’s slightly weird, actually, having your voice floating around in a public space – about 50% of people tell me I sound exactly how I managed, and 50% are telling me I sound nothing like it β¦ so β¦ I guess it’s just weird π
I did think about re-recording it at a less insane word velocity but then I thought β¦ wellβ¦ that’s how I talk, so I might as well go with it π
And thank you π I’m really chuffed to bits to be on that finalist list.
Well… My goodness.
Don’t abandon the idea of being a voice narrator just yet. (Though, yeah, the speed thing needs a little work. π )
I follow your twitter and your blog regularly, Alexis, and to be frank, I half expected to hear a somewhat geeky, slightly immature-sounding voice (your age being over 30 notwithstanding).
I stand delightfully corrected.
Um β¦ thank you? I think? π Hehe, I’m not quite sure what to say. While I’m pretty sure I can’t do anything about nerdy – for I am, indeed, somewhat nerdy, immature is a bit embarrassing π I guess I do tend to be pretty frivolous π
And, yes, I tend to speak quite quickly anymore, and even more so when I’m self-conscious so β¦ it was basically a desperate word race π
Well, I’m the one who’s embarrassed. That’s what I get for forming impressions of people based on their Twitter posts. What was I thinking?
(In my defense, I think I was mislead by all the Zombie, war game, and GoT talk. π )
*laughs* No, it’s fine, I was (slightly) teasing. I was tweeting about GoT recently because that’s what we’re watching. It has this weird place in our history because when we ran into each other again after university, it was what we talked aboutβ¦ the books, I mean, as I think book three had just come out. So I guess we bonded over it, and watching it now is like this β¦ strange echo π Oddly romantic. Oddly being perhaps the key words there π
Big, giant, HUGE congratulations on the nomination! That is so exciting – I’m squeeing all over the place on your behalf.
I have downloaded the clip so I can listen to it in my ears. I listened to just the very first few seconds on the net – but I can’t sit still and listen for 15 minutes so I shall iPod it. You do speak fast! LOL – I will have to concentrate.
This was a lovely surprise on all levels. Yay for everybody! π π π
Thank you π I’m quite bewildered but all delighted.
Hahah, enjoy having me babbling at you while you’re doing the dishes or whatever. Actually, I’m the same. I’ll listen to anything when it’s on my iPod but I rarely sit down at the computer to listen π
Congratulations on being a Lambda finalist. Glitterland was poetic and heartrending and created two of the most memorable characters of the year, so it is well deserved.
I hope you win.
Also, loved the reading. Thanks
Oh thank you, that’s really kind. I’m just chuffed to have reached the finals, so I’m not really thinking/worrying about winning. I’m really happy you enjoyed the book, and that the reading didn’t totally wreck it π
Congratulations on your nomination ( I had to Google what they were) – you sound almost exactly like I expected as well (but was there a northern twang ?) Lovely to hear you read your own work as well.
Thank you π There’s probably a twang there, no matter how I hard I bury it π
So delighted to hear this and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of a Lambda!! Congratulations. It’s a big deal! I will try to get over myself for not having to google the Lambdas and just tell you that I think this is awesome and now I *really* need to read the damn book. I’m sad you won’t be coming to the US this time, but I’m sure this is just the first of many such invitations.
Oh thank you π That’s really kind – and I’m just pleased to have made it to the finals. It’s a pretty strong short list, I think π
And, err, obviously, no obligation on the book front π You might hate it anyway :/
HUGE congrats on making the finals!!! You well deserve it. π
Really lovely to hear you read – thank you for that! π I must admit I kept seeing tasmanian devil’s tornado from Looney Tunes you talk so fast *grins* And, LOL, I was kinda curious if you would cross that propper-Brittish line…. You didn’t disappoint π
Oh thank you π Unexpected but very very eeeee π
And, yes, I do talk way to fast. Especially when I’m nervous. But, hey, at least it was authentic π Next time I’ll try to talk more slowly.
Haha, there’s a proper British line? What’s *eyebrows* improper British? π
I’m sooooo happy for you, Alexis! (And for me also! ;)) Glitterland is my favourite book EVER! I managed to read it even twice within a very short time and I voted to it EVERYWHERE I could. I wish you(and me) that you’ll get this award! I keep my finger crossed for Glitterland (and legs too if it’ll help!) π
Eee, thank you π I’m damn happy just to be on the finalist list – so it’s awesome regardless.
And I’m really happy you enjoyed the book – and thank you for various votings π I’m quite bad at pimping that sort of thing, because I get embarrassed, so I really appreciate it π
This was so awesome. I LOVED it, even if you aren’t a voice actor. Haha. After listening I promptly bought the book. I expect to be consumed with it for the rest of the night. Congrats on being a finalist!! I am sure it is well deserved!
O! Iβm adding my five-and-a-half-years-late squee to the squeeing mix! It was so delightful to run across this. Iβve made sure to share it with Erin P. and the gaggle of people in a messenger group Ardy fan club. <3
