10 Reasons You Should Read There Will Be Phlogiston

  1. It’s free. Okay, admittedly, that it’s more a reason you should obtain it, rather a reason you should read it. But if you like my writing, here’s more of it for nothing. If you don’t like my writing, then you can check to see if you still don’t like my writing and it won’t cost you a penny. If you sometimes like my writing, and sometimes don’t, this is a perfect investment for you. If you’ve never read me before, why not start here? I did say it was free, right?
  2. You’ve seen the cover, yeah?
  3. It is written in 100% standard English. Hmm… having said which, I think there might be like one line in cant? But apart from that. Barely an archaic word or a phonetic spelling in sight. I promise. And, if I’m wrong, you can have your money back.
  4. Carnivorous mechanical horse.
  5. While it is a set in the Prosperity-verse (steampunk England with the usual trappings: Victorian pseudoscience, airships, skytowns, corsets and krakens) and there are some references to the other books, it stands pretty much alone. You can treat it as an entry point if you’re not sure whether you’d be into the Prosperityverse or you can read it as a gently alt-history Victorian romance, and stop right there.
  6. Same-sex dancing.
  7. It contains the line:  “Oh my—” [Rosamond swallowed a gasp] “—you are most extravagantly bedewed.” (It also contains other lines, forty thousand words of them).
  8. It also contains a pansexual alpha male, a debutante who dreams of adventure, and a lonely aristocrat, ashamed of his own desires.
  9. Strip billiards is a thing that happens
  10. There Will Be Phlogiston is the purest romantic fantasy I have ever written. It is a story of personal and sexual freedom in a world that denies both. It is about the things that connect us, not that things that make us different. I wrote it because I believe that love teaches us how to understand each other. I believe that love is empathy. I believe love unites us.

There Will be Phlogiston will be out in December, maybe on the 8th of December, but maybe not, I don’t know, from Riptide Publishing

    And, another lovely cover!

  8. Anne says:

Just ordered mine! It said print version, but I am guessing they will change that to epub of some kind at release time because that would be really expensive to ship off a bunch of free paperbacks.
Also, I LOVE your stunt blurb over at heroesandheartbreakers. I can’t wait to read it!

  9. Pre-ordered and can’t wait to get my hands on it.

  10. Colette says:

Read this today, it was fabulous, I think it may be my favorite read of the year. “Sodomy is magnificent!”

  11. Patrice says:

A wonderful, wonderful love story. Just bought Prosperity. Can’t wait to read more of your books, says this 65 yr-old female who, for some strange reason, has started reading MM romance novels.

  12. Gwen says:

I read it the bittersweet week that Indiana legislated that people could legally be homophobic bigots based on religious freedom. Oh, and it’s really no big deal, because 30 other states have the same laws. So, like, whatever.

This book was the sweet bright light that felt like a salve. I just kept thinking “sodomy is magnificent!” Thanks, Ros.

I kept worrying that there would be pairing off and loss and jealousy. I was so delighted that they made a new family.

  13. Sophie says:

I’ve already devoured and adored There Will Be Phlogiston (I will never be able to adequately express just how much I love Arkady), but I had to comment and say that I really, really like Reason #10.

I read ‘There Will Be Phlogiston’ during the last week of 2020 and it is one of my favorite books (out of 230+) of the year. Finished my Alexis Hall Complete Read (begun when I discovered you, with ‘Boyfriend Material’). Thank you for the wonderful books.
